FIELDWORK IN THE ELEMENTS

Year 12 Geographers Put Skills into Practice

Year 12 A Level Geography students embraced the challenge of the outdoors during three days of fieldwork, undeterred by downpours and strong coastal winds. Their resilience paid off as they immersed themselves in hands-on investigations, bringing key classroom concepts to life.

The trip centred on two contrasting locations: the distinctive town of Totnes, where students explored the concept of sense of place, and the dynamic coastline of Start Bay, where they examined coastal defences and processes in action. These varied environments provided the perfect backdrop for deepening their geographical understanding.

Throughout the experience, students developed and applied a wide range of data collection techniques. From environmental quality surveys and field sketches to measuring beach profiles and analysing coastal management strategies, each activity strengthened their practical skill set.

Back at the centre’s classrooms and lab facilities, students began analysing their findings, transforming raw data into meaningful insights. Using GIS technology, they presented their results in clear and engaging formats, demonstrating both technical confidence and critical thinking.

This fieldwork marks an important step in their A Level journey. Equipped with newly developed skills and a deeper appreciation of real-world geography, students are now ready to embark on their NEA (Non-Examined Assessment) investigations, where they will design and carry out their own independent research projects.
